Already faced with difficult access to water, Egyptians — particularly farmers in the Nile Delta — fear the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project will worsen their daily lives. The dam, which has been under construction since 2011, has proved divisive. Egypt and Sudan say the dam will deprive their nations of essential water supplies, while Ethiopia maintains it will have no negative consequences on either country. The issue has become a political stalemate, with the three countries amplifying their rhetoric to threaten potential war in a continent where water is already in scarce supply.
